A Conversation with Craig Knippenberg, LCSW, M.Div. about tech, teens and toys.

Does out of sight still mean out of mind?

When it comes to young children and devices, the tension parents feel between healthy doses of entertainment vs. over-stimulation and reliance– is real. We don’t know how technology will impact brain development yet– those studies are just now emerging. But we know device-use can be useful and even educational. And we know it’s probably hanging around… too much.

Child development expert, and author, Craig Knippenberg, LCSW, M.Div. gives us 20 seconds of expertise here, related to younger children and the old “out of sight, out of mind” rule. Turns out, it still holds up.

One thing we’re sure of, is that kids model their parents behavior. If we’re always “checking” devices, we are teaching the very same thing.

We created TROVA as a biometric safe to store inappropriate items - things we wouldn’t want our kids (or guests) to discover. But one overwhelming note we get from parents is: “this is the Tech Time Out solution we needed!” Families are leaning on TROVA to keep phones out of sight and out of mind, to gain some sacred hours with no distractions.
